Rainy Weekend in Galveston

Posted: 7/10/2006

Excessive rainfall, thunder, and lightning played an huge roll in the tournament, as the Redfish Nation Series Triton Western Division made its second tour stop in Galveston, Texas this past July 4th weekend at Teakwood Marina on Tiki island. Thirty-eight teams endured the rough conditions and nearly one-third failed to catch a single keeper.

But the weather didn’t seem to affect Tim Young and partner Jason Catchings. The duo from Baytown and Liberty, Texas, respectively, stayed true to their initial strategy and fished with 5 minutes from take-off while of the teams were traveling over thirty miles to avoid heavy rainfall. They were rewarded with first place after Day 1 with 14.93 pounds and more than a two pound lead over Brandon Jenewein and Mike Condit, both of Bay City, TX.

With a comfortable lead, Young and Catchings decided not to change anything as Day 2 got underway with more severe weather and high winds and once again, it paid off. They weighed-in 11.84 pounds on Day 2 to finish with 26.77 and 1.35 pound victory over Jenewein and Condit. The win earned Young and Catchings $15,000 and a birth in the RFN Series Championship in Gulf Shores, AL, September 16 and 17.
