Triton Boat Owners Tournament Day 2

Day two of the Triton Boats Owners Tournament, held out of McFarland Park on Pickwick Lake in Florence, AL, was exciting to say the least. From day one standings, 6.64 pounds was enough for the first half of the field to make the cut and fish on Saturday. The teams that fished today where very aware of fishing behind almost 200 other teams from the day before, and knew they were fishing on pressured waters. However, the weather conditions were quite a bit different from day one, and several limits were brought to the scales like day one. The morning started off with a heavy fog and kept several teams from going straight to the spots they wanted to fish early.

From watching the weigh in, it seemed as if there were bigger bags being brought to the scales on day two than on day one. The general consensus was that it was going to take more than 6.64 pounds to make the cut on day two. However, at the end of the day, it took less than the first day’s weight to make the cut. On the second day, it took just over 6 ¼ pounds to make the cut. Many anglers that thought they didn’t have a chance to fish on Saturday ended up with just enough weight to take them to the final day. No teams from day two were able to catch more than day one leaders, Roger Gean and Danny Montgomery, who managed to bring in 16.60 pounds to the scales.

The weather was a little different than it was on day one. Although it was still hot, there was more cloud coverage than day one and some parts of the river got some rain. Towards the end of day, it looked as if there was going to be some strong rain and possible thunderstorms. However, the bad weather held off and the weigh in went on without a hitch.

Richard Mason from Athens, AL, a member of American Bass Anglers, and partner Brian Parker from Corinth, MS ended up in first place on day two with 14.60 pounds. They wouldn’t tell me exactly where they were fishing, but they did say that they were fairly close from the launch site. “We caught fish pretty much all day. The fish we caught early came from shallow water, and we caught a few in some deeper water later on in the day,” said Mason. I asked them if they would stay on Pickwick on Saturday, but they said they weren’t sure yet and would figure it out later.

Several teams weighed in some good bags in excess of ten pounds. Some said they caught enough to make the cut, while others said they caught everything that they could get to bite. Stacey and Willie Weathers from North Carolina brought a limit to the scales that weighed 12.38 pounds. ABA member Norman Ligon and Roger Riddle, both from Moulton, AL, also had 12.38 pounds. They made about a 10 mile run from McFarland Park to catch their fish. “We had and early bite going and had our limit by 8:00 and we caught them in about 3-5 feet of water,” said Ligon. While on the stage weighing their fish, Ray Scott, Founder of B.A.S.S., was making one dollar bets with the team to see who could guess the weight of their biggest fish.

Although several good bags were weighed in today, the most exciting story that took place was the winner of the big bass on day two. Nick and Koby Newman, a father and son team from Kennedy, AL, weighed in their fish pretty early after the weigh in began. Although they only had 6.06 pounds total weight, they had one largemouth that weighed 4.96 pounds, and kept them anxious until the last team weighed in. Fourteen year old Koby Newman caught the big fish in Second Creek, which turned out to be the big bass for day two of the Triton Boats Owners Tournament. The father and son team were fishing in Second Creek on Pickwick Lake when Koby caught the fish. “We were fishing in about 1-2 feet of water, and we saw the fish swimming around,” said Koby’s father. Koby was using a green pumpkin seed Gary Yamamoto Kreature bait that was rigged Texas Style. “I threw the lure into some grass by a pole, and just let it sit there. All of a sudden, the bass nailed it and the fight was on,” added Koby. After they weighed in their fish and realized that they had the biggest bass for the tournament on day two, the nerves began to sit in. Koby was pacing around in circles while team after team weighed in their fish, in hopes that his big catch would stand up until the end.

By the time the last team came up to weigh in, the whole crowd knew this fourteen year old was praying that he had won big fish. Well, the tournament directors and emcee Shaw Grigsby knew that Koby was going to win big bass, but they wanted to play a trick on him. When the last team came up to weigh in their fish, they pretended that the team had a really big fish that was going to weigh at least five pounds. After playing around, they finally announce that the last team had not won big fish and the crowd erupted for Koby and his amazing catch that won big bass for day two of the tournament. Koby also said that the fish had bent his 3/0 Gamakatsu hook during the struggle. Ray Scott, Earl Bentz, and Shaw Grigsby were so impressed with Koby’s catch, that they each gave him an additional $100 each. When Koby was asked what he was going to do with his $1,300 he won for his big fish, he said, “I’ll pay my dad back for the entry fee!”

I had the chance to talk with Koby after the weigh in and he told me that this was the first time he had ever fished on Pickwick Lake. “I normally fish local ponds and sometimes I fish on Wheeler Lake,” added Koby. His dad, Nick Newman told me that they have a place in Rogersville, AL and they spend a lot of time on Wheeler Lake.

The final day of the Triton Boats Owners Tournament should be exciting. With the weights being zeroed out, every team has just as good of a chance as winning the $10,000 first place prize as the next. It will be interesting to see how many teams actually stay on Pickwick, and how many take a chance at locking through to Wilson or Wheeler Lakes. From what I have heard about Wilson Lake in the last couple of weeks, I strongly believe that many teams will lock through and take their chances on a lake that is producing some big fish.
