Schaaf of VA takes Gold Elite! (Results are below the article)

FLORENCE, AL – Todd Schaaf, a 34-year-old Triton boat owner from Hume, Va., beat out 35 other anglers to win the second annual Triton Gold Elite Fish-Off, held June 22 on Wilson Lake, Ala. out of Fleet Harbor Marina. For his five-fish limit weighing 13.33 pounds, Schaaf pocketed the first prize payout of $40,000. Schaaf, who owns a ceramic tile and marble business, qualified for the prestigious Gold Elite event by winning two separate Virginia Bass Federation state championships and a Bass Fishing League (BFL) event, each of which was sanctioned under the Triton Gold tournament rewards program. Under this program, Triton owners who win sanctioned events receive bonus cash and earn a berth in the annual Gold Elite Fish-Off.

Schaaf admits he was somewhat ill-prepared to fish the 15,500-acre impoundment on the Tennessee River. "In Virginia, I mainly fish tidal waters, and don’t fish many lakes," he said. "I didn’t even have a map of the lake, so I didn’t have much of a clue where I was going – I just went fishing." The Virginia angler used his two practice days locating spots that he felt had potential to hold quality bass. "I fish a lot of shallow water back home – bass are often a lot shallower than you’d think they’d be," he indicated. "I found several places on Wilson with what I call ‘river grass’ growing off the bank that held fish – I could actually see them swimming around in a foot and a half of water."

On the morning of competition, Schaaf and the other Gold Elite qualifiers took off at 5:30 and ran to their hotspots. "I went directly to those shallow fish I’d spotted in practice and had a limit by 7 a.m.," he said. "I caught these bass, all largemouths, on a homemade 3/8-ounce green, chartreuse and orange jig with a frog trailer. Then I started making a milk run of other spots I’d found during practice in hopes of
catching some bigger fish."

Schaaf solidified his Gold Elite victory at 10 a.m., when he caught a 5.26-pound smallmouth bass off a rockpile on a Bandit 200 crankbait that he’d custom-painted green, brown and orange.

Second place in the event went to Kevin Wayne Sutton of Kinston, N.C. (12.36 pounds), who took home $10,000. Paul Tormanen of Lee’s Summit, Mo., finished third with 11.28 pounds and won $5,000 for his effort.

Triton Boats president Earl Bentz called Schaaf’s wife, Allison, on her cell phone to inform her that her husband had won $40,000. "She’s expecting our second child in August, and I was a little worried that she’d too excited and deliver early!" he said. "She was as thrilled as I was."

Schaaf fishes from a 2005 Triton Tr-20X boat equipped with a Mercury outboard, MotorGuide trolling motor and Lowrance electronics, which he purchased from Pop’s Marine in Toano, Va. "This boat is awesome for tournament competition," he said. "It handles rough water like a dream and fishes great. You couldn’t ask for a better bass boat than a Triton X Series. I hope to fish some bigger events in the future and would eventually like to compete on the BASS tour, and this
is the perfect boat to do it in."
